What is CBG and Why Should I Take It?

What is CBG?

By now, most people familiar with cannabis have heard of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol) and their effects, but did you know there are many similar compounds in cannabis? A lesser-known cannabinoid called cannabigerol (CBG), while not present in large quantities in most strains, is nonetheless worth learning about for a number of reasons.

How is CBG made?

Because it is present in low levels (usually less than 1%) in most cannabis strains, CBG is considered a minor cannabinoid. Cannabis plants produce cannabigerolic acid (CBGA), the precursor to the three main cannabinoid lines: tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCA), cannabidiolic acid (CBDA), and cannabichromenic acid (CBCA).

Specific enzymes in the plant break CBGA down and “direct” it toward one of the three lines. The acids are exposed to ultraviolet light or heat, and voila, they become the cannabinoids we know: THC and CBD. In most strains, CBGA is immediately converted to either THCA or CBDA. Thus, more THC means less CBG and CBD (and vice versa) by nature of how these compounds are synthesized.

To obtain higher yields of CBG, breeders are experimenting with genetic manipulation and cross-breeding of plants. For example, Subcool Seeds is crossing strains to produce higher CBG contents. Scientists can also extract higher levels of CBG from budding plants by pinpointing the optimum extraction time, about six weeks into an eight week flowering cycle. A medicinal strain called Bediol is produced in this fashion by the Dutch company Bedrocan BV Medicinal Cannabis.

What’s the Difference Between CBD and CBG?

As mentioned, CBG helps make CBD, so while they’re both cannabinoids, they’re different compounds within the cannabis plant. Additionally, they serve different purposes and may help treat different ailments, despite some potential pharmacological overlap.

Both CBG and CBD are currently considered non-psychotropic, meaning they won’t alter your state of mind in a way that would inhibit your day-to-day function and mental clarity. They can, however, alter your mind in a way that could potentially relieve anxiety and depression. So perhaps a better description of this would be “non-intoxicating”-it won’t get you high in the way THC can.

Another important note: Like CBD, CBG may counteract the intoxicating effects of THC, says Dr. Solomon. “Studies of CBG seem to show that it activates the CB1 receptor just as CBD does, which essentially decreases psycho-activation,” he says.

This means if you consume cannabis that has a high concentration of CBD and CBG, or consume an isolate of CBG in addition to consuming (read: smoking or eating) cannabis, you could potentially counterbalance the “high” or intoxication. There is CBG naturally found in the cannabis you’re already consuming, but likely not in a large enough quantity to make any difference.

CBG may also increase your appetite. CBG made “lab animals like rats” hungrier, which is not the school of thought with CBD (as far as we know), according to Dr. Solomon. It’s also different from another phytocannabinoid, THCV, which inhibits appetite and may lead to weight loss.

Does CBG Have Any Side Effects?

CBG does not have any side effects when taken in therapeutic doses. The key words there are “therapeutic doses.” You can experience negative side effects if you consume too much of any substance…even water.

Thankfully, CBG only becomes a problem when taken in excess of 300 milligrams per kilogram of body weight.

For a 180-pound person, that means they would have to consume 54,000 milligrams of CBG for it to become dangerous. To put that in perspective, a 180-pound person suffering from severe pain should take, at the most, 25 milligrams to feel relief.

25 milligrams of CBG will likely be administered in a few drops of tincture or a small amount of an edible. So you can see that there’s a huge difference between a “therapeutic dose” and one that would cause side effects.

What Are The Benefits Of CBG?

May treat glaucoma and relieve intraocular pressure • Have antibacterial properties, particularly for MRSA • Contributes to GABA reuptake inhibition • Could help inflammatory bowel disease and colitis • May work for Huntington’s and neurodegenerative diseases • Anti-proliferative (inhibits cancer cell growth). • Showing major promise for inflammation, including of the skin • Analgesic (relieves pain) • Anti-convulsive (reduces seizures and convulsions) • Anti-insomnia (aids sleep) • Bone stimulant (promotes bone growth) • Brain cell stimulant (promotes neuron growth) • Appetite stimulant (increases appetite)

What Disorders Can CBG Treat?

Glaucoma • Inflammatory bowel disease • Anti-inflammatory disorders • Epilepsy • Chronic pain • Depression • OsteoporosisInsomnia •  Huntington’s disease •  CancerMethicillin-resistant microbial strains such as MRSA • Low appetite Bladder dysfunctionPsoriasis

What is Kratom and why should I take it?

What is Kratom?

Mitragyna speciosa is a tropical evergreen tree in the coffee family native to Southeast Asia. It is indigenous to Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, and Papua New Guinea, where it has been used in traditional medicines since at least the nineteenth century.

Kratom Strains and their different colors?

1. Red Vein Kratom

Red Vein Kratom leaves have red colored stem and veins. Red kratom is by far the best selling and most widely available strain of kratom on the market. The red vein is sold more than the green and white vein combined. The red vein kratom plant grows abundantly in Southeast Asia and is slightly more persistent than other Mitragyna Speciosa trees. Some studies claim that the substances that give rise to the red color of the veins also ensure that the plant is less susceptible to external factors.

Red vein leaves from a trusted source are great for beginners because kratom they produce pleasant calming effects. It gives peace of mind and it gives you a feeling of well-being and optimism. In addition, red kratom is suitable as a sleep aid for people with insomnia. Physically, the red vein is known to relax the body and relieve pain. It relaxes the muscles and can be used as a supplement or replacement of pharmaceutical painkillers. The strongest red kratom extracts are used to prevent withdrawal symptoms of opiate addicts.

Within the red veins, there are considerable differences in the effects and properties. Some strains such as the Red Thai or the Red Vein Borneo have a sedative effect while others like the Red Sumatra produce an elated mood. As with the other types of kratom that, the effects depend on the dose. The red vein produces in small doses a stimulating effect, but overall are the red vein strains are used to promote peace and tranquility.

2. White Vein Kratom

White vein kratom is known as a stimulant and positive mood enhancer. The effect of each strain off course depends on numerous factors such as the quality of the product, lifestyle and tolerance level of the individual. However, the trend is that the white veins are most stimulating and euphoric of all kratom strains. White kratom is increasingly taken instead of coffee (caffeine) for alertness, concentration and cheerfulness. Many have come to take white kratom for increased concentration, motivation and stamina during long working days.

For those who experience gloomy periods or at times feel very exhausted experience the best results when using this strain of kratom. Advisable is to not take this too late in the day as this can lead to restless sleep. It is common practice to mix white vein powder with red vein strains in order to achieve a more balanced boost in energy.

3. Green Vein Kratom

Green Vein Kratom can best be described as somewhere in between the red and white kratom strains. It is a mild energy booster that can brighten one up.

People who have experimented with it report that it helps them to enhance alertness and focus, to get in the “flow”. The green vein strains are more subtle than the red or white veins. In general, they can be useful in treatment of pain and other discomforts, precisely because the green veins do not lead to drowsiness, which is often caused by other analgesic supplements.

Green vein kratom can be mixed with red or white kratom strains to create a more rounded flavor with a more sophisticated effect. When properly mixed it prevents the excessive anesthesia of the red veins and the overstimulation of the white veins.

Due to the balanced functioning green vein kratom is often used against social fears. You will be less afraid and more able to disregard the importance of other people’s impressions and opinions. Therefore, the green veins are popular during recreational activities such as a night out in town. Green vein kratom makes you more talkative, friendly and cheerful. You will be more inclined to immerse yourself among people while comfortable in your own skin.

Red, white or green kratom?

Which kind of kratom is most appropriate for you depends on your personal preferences and the situation you’re in. With kratom this can be quite complicated because the effects can vary within the same strain color. It depends on quality, location, climate, harvesting method etc. Not all red veins will have the same results and this also applies to the white and green veins.

The characteristics described in this article can best be considered as general guidelines for each kratom strain and color. A great way to determine which kratom strain is best for you is to order a kratom sample pack. The sample pack contains kratom powders of all the different strains we offer at Kratomgardens. With ordering a kratom sample pack you can find out for yourself what kind of strain is most suitable for your needs.

What Causes Different Kratom Vein Colors?

Vein color can be due to the region in which the tree was grown – different rainfall/temperature/humidity/soil can result in leaves showing their vein colors at different times. Often, cultivators note that younger leaves will present with white veins, while older leaves will have transitioned into red vein.

There isn’t any hard and fast science on vein colors yet, beyond the accepted idea that they contain different balances of the healing alkaloids, which provide the different effects. Hopefully, as kratom continues to grow in popularity as an alternative to many pharmaceutical medicines, more research will be done into identifying the exact cause of vein color variations, and perhaps even breeding for certain colors/effects.

What is Yellow Kratom?

Yellow kratom is not a vein color. Rather, yellow refers to the tint that sometimes accompanies the leaves after this unique curing and fermentation process. Undertaken with the best green and white vein leaves of the indicated region, the fermentation process causes changes in the alkaloids, leaving you with a healing strain that falls somewhere between red vein and green vein. Yellow is definitely worth a try if you’re looking for relaxation but haven’t found a more common variety that works for you.
